Speaker: Dharm Veer (Purdue University) Title: Complements and complementary homologies Abstract: Let L be a finite lattice, and let L' denote the poset obtained by deleting the unique minimal element 0 and the unique maximal element 1. Two elements of L are said to be complements if their meet is 0 and their join is 1. In this talk we ask whether global non-vanishing homology of L' forces local non-vanishing homology for pairs of complements in "complementary homological dimensions". We then apply this to monomial ideals and their Betti numbers. This is a joint project with Sara Faridi and Volkmar Welker. Following the seminar, participants are warmly invited to join the speaker for dinner. If you would like to attend, please email John Bergdall (bergdall@uark.edu) or speak with one of the seminar organizers during the event.
