Camping near Northwest Arkansas: Beaver Lake, the Buffalo River & state parks

Where to pitch a tent or park an RV within reach of Fayetteville, Bentonville and Eureka Springs: the 11 Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Beaver Lake, four Arkansas State Parks, the Buffalo National River's campgrounds, Coler Campground in Bentonville, Lake Leatherwood in Eureka Springs and a few private RV parks. Lake Wedington's campground is closed for a Forest Service waterline project. Five of the Beaver Lake parks, the state parks and most Buffalo River campgrounds stay open through winter. Fees, seasons and rules are as posted by Recreation.gov, the Corps, Arkansas State Parks, the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the cities and each private park on Oct 9, 2026. Nobody paid to be listed, and the order is by agency, not by preference.

Orange pins and badges are open this weekend, from each place's posted schedule.

The essentials

Book ahead

Beaver Lake (Corps)
Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777. On Oct 9 the booking calendar took arrivals through Apr 8, 2027, about six months out. Check-in 4 PM, check-out 1 PM. No more than 14 days in any 30 at Beaver Lake.
Buffalo River (NPS)
Recreation.gov or 877-444-6777. Most fee campgrounds book same day up to 6 months ahead, group sites up to a year. In season every fee campground needs a reservation except Buffalo Point's A and E loops and walk-ins; from Mar 15, 2027 all of Buffalo Point does too. Cell service is unreliable, so book before you drive in.
State parks
reserve.arkansasstateparks.com or call the park. Nightly rates show when you pick dates; the park pages don't list them. Book Devil's Den's horse camp by phone.
Coler Campground
Peel Compton Foundation's booking page, 180 days out. Two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday, and reservations are non-refundable.
Lake Leatherwood
Book online from the city park's lodging page, or call the park office at 479-253-7921 (daily 8 AM–4 PM).

Open in winter (Nov–Mar)

Beaver Lake
Prairie Creek, Hickory Creek, Horseshoe Bend, Lost Bridge North and Dam Site River keep some sites open at off-peak rates (Recreation.gov showed about 18, 18, 51, 33 and 37 sites bookable in November and January). The rest of their sites close. Dam Site Lake and Rocky Branch close after Oct 30; War Eagle, Starkey, Indian Creek and Lost Bridge South are already closed for 2026.
State parks
Devil's Den, Withrow Springs and Lake Fort Smith list their campgrounds as open all year; Lake Fort Smith's restrooms are open March–November. Hobbs' Karst Loop sites are open all year; the Pigeon Roost sites close during the Nov 7–8 and Nov 14–18 gun hunts.
Buffalo River
After the fee season ends (Nov 16, 2026 on the upper river), most campgrounds stay open free and first-come with vault toilets only. Tyler Bend's drive-in loop keeps water and showers; Buffalo Point keeps only B Loop, without hookups.
City & private parks
Lake Leatherwood's camping and cabins are open year-round. Coler Campground posts no closing season; its outdoor showers, bike wash, refill station and dish sink close for winter. Beaver Lake Glamping & RV Resort says it's open all year. Lake Wedington is closed.

Dogs

Beaver Lake (Corps)
Pets in a pen, a cage or on a 6-foot leash at all times, and never left at the site alone (Recreation.gov park notices). Clean up after them.
Buffalo River
Welcome in every campground and on gravel bars, under control at all times. Only a few trails allow them: the Buffalo River Trail between Ponca and Steel Creek is one; Lost Valley isn't.
State parks
Arkansas State Parks says most of its campgrounds are pet-friendly. Dog-friendly cabins, for a fee: Devil's Den cabins 2, 3, 5 and 7, and Lake Fort Smith cabins 1 and 2.
City & private parks
Coler Campground allows no pets. Lake Leatherwood requires a leash, and cabins carry a $25 pet fee. Beaver Lake Glamping welcomes leashed pets; Wanderlust takes pets at RV sites but not in its cabins.

Fire bans

Right now
In the Arkansas Forestry Division's Oct 7, 2026 update, Carroll County (Eureka Springs and Lake Leatherwood) and Madison County (Withrow Springs) were under county burn bans, and every county in the state, Benton and Washington included, was at high wildfire danger.
Check the morning you go
County judges issue and lift bans, and the Forestry map changes as they do. Federal and city parks post their own fire rules, so ask the campground whether a ban applies to its fire rings.
National forest
The Forest Service lists fire danger on the Ozark-St. Francis as very high and asks campers to keep fires in designated rings, never leave one unattended, and follow local burn bans.
Firewood
Buy it where you camp. The Corps asks you not to move firewood, Coler bans outside wood (it sells seasoned wood except during burn bans), and Buffalo River fires go in the fire rings.

Call ahead

These come up in older roundups, but nothing official confirms a 2026 season yet.

  • Lake Wedington. Closed since July 2, 2026 for a Forest Service waterline project, walk-ins included, with no end date. Call the Boston Mountain Ranger District at 479-667-2191 before you plan a trip.
  • Lost Valley and Ponca. Neither has a campground. The Park Service lists no campsites at Lost Valley and bans camping along the Lost Valley Trail. Steel Creek, about 3 miles east of Ponca, is the closest place to camp.
  • State park campsites. The state's booking site wouldn't let us check live availability or rates. Call Devil's Den (479-761-3325), Withrow Springs (479-559-2593) or Lake Fort Smith (479-369-2469) before you plan around a site, and ask whether the water is on in winter.
  • Beaver Lake Hideaway Campground. Older listings use this name at 8369 Campground Circle in Rogers, the address Beaver Lake Glamping & RV Resort now lists. The old Hideaway website forwards to an unrelated site, so book through beaverlakeglamping.com or call 479-925-1333.

Quick answers

At 11 Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds, booked on Recreation.gov or at 1-877-444-6777. Five of them (Prairie Creek, Hickory Creek, Horseshoe Bend, Lost Bridge North and Dam Site River) keep some sites open through winter; Dam Site Lake and Rocky Branch close after Oct 30, and War Eagle, Starkey, Indian Creek and Lost Bridge South are closed for 2026. How much does it cost to camp at Beaver Lake?
$20–$29 a night at the Corps parks in peak season, with double sites $38 and a triple at Horseshoe Bend $50. Off-peak sites at the five winter parks run $17–$25. Every bookable site has electric; some add water or full hookups.
How far ahead can you book a Beaver Lake campsite?
About six months. On Oct 9, 2026, Recreation.gov took arrivals through Apr 8, 2027. Check-in is 4 PM, check-out 1 PM, and you can stay no more than 14 days in any 30 at Beaver Lake.
